Some say love, it is a river,
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor,
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need,
I say love, it is a flower,
And you it's only seed.
It's the heart, afraid of breaking,
That never, learns to dance.
It's the dream, afraid of waking,
That never, takes the chance.
It's the one, who won't be taken,
Who cannot, seem to give.
And the soul, afraid of dying,
That never, learns to live.
When the night has, been to lonely,
And the road has been to long.
That you think that love is only,
For the lucky and the strong.
Just remember in the winter,
Far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed that with the suns love,
In the spring becomes the rose.
Do you know the words to The Rose? What do they mean to you?
Even when it seems it's gone, love is always waiting just under the surface to blossom and grow. Love this song and Bette did a beautiful job with it.
Reply:Love is a seed that grows through the brightness of the day and the darkness of the night. You can't be afraid to take the chance to love. Whthout love in your life, you have nothing. Love survives all.
Reply:Yes, have known since it came out. Sang it once solo in Chorale. Disagree that it's over the heads of most posters here. Only over the heads of those who allow cynics their greater attention.
When I sang it, people in the audience were singing along or swaying or smiling, or listening with their eyes closed. It's a hymn to truth, especially the second verse. I've always thought young people hearing that second verse for the first time have had many heartfelt pieces of their puzzles come together.
What it means to me is that it's a hymn to truth.
Reply:The answer is in the last four lines.
The seed of Love will never die.
I used to cry and sing this at the same time. It also reminds me of something I learned in the 60's. "Your pain is the breaking of the shell which encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break so it's heart may stand in the sun...so must you know pain."
Love does not come without pain. But it will endure.
Thanks for the reminder of one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Reply:"The Rose" is a beautiful piece of work that I compare to a "Home made" quilt. Someone put all their love, sorrow and joy into it. Very serious and sad, like myself at times.
Reply:It is such a beautiful song. To me it means that in order to experience love, we have to be willing to give it, no matter the consequences. To have never loved someone or risked loving someone, is to never have lived. And I believe that it starts with learning to love ourselves, the seed is in our own hearts.
Reply:To me it means love can be seen in so many ways to different people, being scared of falling properly in love with someone
But in the end love is love and it's for anyone and everything and it starts as a small thing but ends up full bloom, big and beautiful- like a rose.
Reply:"The Rose" has to be the best love song of the early 80's. To me it means Love can be like a Beautiful Rose or Love can be like the Thorns on the steam of the Rose.I feel this song has a double meaning.
Reply:Some people think that love suffociates and causes great pain. Some believe it tears your heart out and it will never be the same, again. Some are addicted to the high of a new love, it's always the same.
Because of all the pain from something confused with love, some people are afraid to take the chance to find out what love really is and how wonderful it can make you feel.
When you think that love is only for someone else, just know that it is there for you too. It starts within your own heart and melts the shell around you.
Sometimes you have to wait for the snow to melt and the sun to shine, before you can see the love that has been germinating in a dark, hidden place, all this time.
Reply:Yes NA NA I did know the words, thanks for the reminder!
Hope everyone who reads the words likes the message! CJ
Reply:thank you.
Reply:I attempted...to sing the tune with the words. It seems to mean never give up hope for the good things.
Reply:Corny.
Reply:Yes...I do....for decades. Too deep for the posters here.
Reply:The rose is a rose
And was always a rose
But the theory now goes
That the apple's a rose
And the pear is, and so's
The plum,I suppose
The dear only knows
What will next prove a rose
You,of course, are a rose
But were always a rose
